What makes our Data Science and Analytics BSc course different from other courses and what’s the secret behind our students’ success? In this article, we reveal five reasons why you should study with us on this programme.
1. You’ll gain practical skills from the start to boost your employability
Our course is designed to meet different learning styles and it incorporates the fundamental principles and technologies that underpin maths, statistics and computing. As long as you’re passionate about STEM subjects (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) you don’t need any previous experience before joining this course, as we start from scratch and teach you everything you need to build a successful career in data science and analytics.
2. A diverse course that combines analytical and technical skills
While most courses focus on one or the other, this course will give you a combination of analytical and programming skills to help you convert data into valuable insights. You’ll also learn to experiment with data by using various machine learning algorithms, statistical techniques and programming languages such as R and Python.
As part of the course, you will get a chance to complete work-based learning experiences that will give you the opportunity to work on real-life problems, working closely with our partners on small-scale projects. This experience will allow you to put theory into practice by applying your knowledge and skills gained from various modules to address a real-life situation, usually within the context of a business-related problem.
3. Industry network opportunities from early on
All students on this course qualify for a free British Computer Society (BCS) student membership for the duration of their studies. The BCS is the professional body for computing, and it supports those working in the IT industry. It has over 60,000 members in 150 countries, and a wider community of business leaders, educators, practitioners and policymakers. The membership will allow students to kickstart their professional development and enjoy access to a range of valuable resources. For more information, visit the BCS website here.
Our course team is also committed to organising extra curriculum activities that include seminars delivered by industry experts, practical workshops and site visits. Most recently, students enjoyed a guest talk delivered by Sky’s data science team. They presented the value of forecasting Sky customer-life journey, and the approach used for forecasting customer retention KPIs.
Last year, students also had access to a free two-week summer workshop with George Mason University that explored machine learning and AI using Python. At the end of the course, students received a certificate to highlight their professional development.
4. You’ll have access to our recently refurbished state-of-the-art facilities
We’ve recently invested £3 million in refurbishing facilities within Westminster’s School of Computer Science and Engineering. This means you’ll have access to multiple specialist labs, Microsoft development software and VR hardware.
5. Work while you learn
The university runs a dedicated job board called ‘Engage’ that allows students to access the latest internships, part-time, graduate and voluntary opportunities. Students who are interested in a particular industry can also search for specific employers and receive notifications when new jobs are added.
Additionally, data from Statista shows that in 2021, the global big data market is predicted to be worth $64 billion. So despite the pandemic, data science has grown to become one of the most popular professions. Companies across industries are now on the lookout for data scientists, meaning there has never been a better time to apply for a data science programme.
