OPEN2022 is the School of Architecture and Cities’ annual exhibition celebrating Architecture students’ exceptional end-of-year projects. The exhibition reflects the varied design approaches, diversity of the students, and their place at the heart of London.
We sat down with Grace Lancto, a third-year Architecture and Environmental Design student to find out more about her work.
What inspired you to create your final year project?
My final work is inspired by my passion for addressing the climate change emergency. We have failed to understand the implications of our actions on our surrounding environment for too many years. Our world has been built on the foundation of a linear economic system that disregards the value of products and materials after their first use.
What are you most excited about for the degree show?
I am excited to see all of the projects from the architecture students showcased and celebrated through the exhibition. Both students and staff put a lot of effort into each exhibition and it shows the strong sense of community that is held at Westminster.
What are your plans now that you’re about to graduate?
I will be returning to my home in the United States for the summer, and am looking for jobs in the area of environmental consulting or sustainability consulting. I am very excited to also return to London in July for the graduation ceremony.
What are long term career aspirations?
My long term career aspirations are to pursue a career in urban design, focused on building climate resilience. I am very interested in contributing to the innovative solutions in the field of sustainability to help communities, buildings, and natural environments to stay healthy and strong as we live through the climate emergency.
The exhibition will launch at 5.30PM on Thursday 16 June with a hybrid event, for both in-person attendees and those who may wish to attend online (via Zoom).
The physical exhibition will be supported by an open-ended online iteration OPEN 2022, which will launch at 5pm on 16 June via this page.
OPEN 2022 forms part of the 2022 London Festival of Architecture with a number of events planned across the University to coincide with this year’s theme of ‘Act’.
