We are immensely proud of our engaged alumni community, who continue to provide us with invaluable advice and support, helping us change more lives and shape a brighter future both in the UK and abroad.
During last year’s Telephone Appeal, around 300 alumni joined our Alumni Fund, which supports a number of key projects across the University. As well as sharing memorable stories from University life and providing vital career advice to our student callers, our alumni generously pledged nearly £80,000 towards the Fund.
Every donation truly does make a real difference and collectively our alumni have helped us achieve remarkable things. In recent years, through our Telephone Appeal we have been able to:
- Help six academically gifted students achieve their potential and realise their ambitions despite financial hardship, through the newly-created ‘New Generations Awards’
- Enable four students to gain valuable work experience through skills-building work placements abroad, as part of our ‘Distant Horizons’ programme
- Contribute towards important research into breast cancer treatment and prevention, through the development of a mobile diet app for patients, and generating new knowledge of how tumour cells respond to different drug therapies
- Help fund the restoration and reopening of the historic Regent Street Cinema showcasing exceptional work, nurturing future talent and celebrating our rich cinematic heritage.
We are delighted to have been able to offer these life-changing and career-enhancing opportunities with your help, and to advance pioneering scientific research in the same innovative spirit which created the Polytechnic Institute all those years ago. This academic year, we look forward to building on these sturdy foundations through our upcoming Telephone Appeal, which will begin in November. In keeping with our efforts to expand the circle of support available to those students who need it most, we have also recently established the Robert Mitchell Society as our giving circle which recognises those who make an annual gift of £1,000 or more towards scholarships and student support.
In today’s challenging economic climate, with further uncertainties ahead for the future of higher education, we remain committed to enabling access to education for all those who have the ambition and talent to learn, regardless of their means.
The support of our alumni is more important than ever and we’d like to encourage you to consider helping us change more lives, through the Alumni Fund.

“Having fulfilled a great achievement in being the first in my family to attend University and reaping the success in my first two years through determination and perseverance, I now hope to conclude my final year at this University with flying colours, starting off by participating in a week-long financial management simulation event and representing the University. The financial assistance the Distant Horizons Award offers will enable me to accomplish and realise this ambition and broaden my horizon on a global scale.” Sorwar Khan, BA(Hons) Business Management class of 2015, Professor Moorad Choudhry scholar and Distant Horizons scholar
