Just 10 hours of your time could change a student’s career
Each year, hundreds of students apply for our mentoring scheme, seeking advice and guidance on their chosen career path from people like you. We currently have more mentees than we have mentors so we need your help.
We are looking for University of Westminster alumni who:
- Can spare 10 hours to mentor a current student from this November
- Wish to develop their mentoring and coaching skills
- Have more than four years of experience in a graduate-level role
- Or have insight into recruitment and selection into a particular industry
This is an opportunity for you to share your hard-won advice and guidance and give an up-to-date insight into what it is like to work in your sector to a current Westminster student. You can help them gain confidence, begin to build their professional network and develop key employment skills.
What’s involved?
Our mentors and students meet once or twice a month between November and April, usually at the mentor’s workplace, although space can be made available at the University. The mentoring partnership will involve a minimum of 10 hours of your time.
With our support, you will draw up a Learning Contract with the student which sets out the objectives for the scheme, and how they can be achieved. The scheme aims to build mutually supportive relationships, with objectives that could include:
- improvement of study skills
- building self-confidence
- time management
- communication skills
- enhanced understanding of the world of work
You will be invited to attend an induction session, where you will be introduced to your mentee, and we also hope you will feed back to us at regular intervals. We also organise a celebration evening to mark the end of the scheme in April/May.
I am based overseas; can I still mentor a student?
We welcome applications from those based all around the world to participate in the scheme. Students and their mentors can conduct their meetings in person or via Skype. We currently have mentors based in China, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Romania and many other countries.
Where can I sign up?
Please sign up using our Mentor Application Form. Although the deadline to be matched with a student this term has passed, we accept applications throughout the year for future cycles of mentoring.
