In this episode, our host Prof. Brendon Noble (Director of the Institute for Healthy Urban Living) sits down with the incredibly talented Garry Hunter, a renowned photographer, creative visionary and the Arts Advisor to IHUL at the University of Westminster.
Garry’s journey is anything but traditional. The son of a coal miner and a chemist, he originally studied engineering before carving out a world-class career in photography – all while navigating the industry as a color-blind photographer, a revelation he only discovered later in life!
Join Brendon and Garry as they dive into: • Garry’s childhood roots in Northeast England. • His early days starting out as an assistant in a photography lab. • Fascinating stories from his international projects, including working with the United Nations. • His incredible community-driven work based in Fitzrovia and along the Lower Lea, transforming neglected spaces – from old GP surgeries to Victorian steamships – into vibrant cultural hubs. Garry’s work perfectly embodies the IHUL mission, showing how creative engagement, heritage, and art can revitalise urban spaces and support mental health and community well-being.
Tune in for an inspiring conversation on the intersection of art, history, and healthy urban living! 💡
