Hello readers! I hope you are well and that semester two is not killing you yet! If so, take your time to relax and read this post! Have you ever wondered how a red carpet full of celebrities looks like? Have you ever wanted to view one? Well, in this blog I will take you through the BAFTAs 2020 Red Carpet.
BAFTAs red carpet viewing
I have always been passionate about the film industry and have always done some acting on the side. I have also always been a massive fan of many Hollywood stars. As any enthusiast, I have always watched the yearly ceremonies such as the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, The Oscars and BAFTAs. I always wondered what goes on behind the scenes we only get to see on TV. Thus, this year I wanted to do something different and assist live to one of these awards, the BAFTAs. Living in London – especially as a student – means you can train your aspirations and experience what pleases you most. I applied forfree ticket to the BAFTA 2020 Red Carpet public viewing and guess what – I got it!
What are BAFTAs?
As you probably know the BAFTAs are the British Film Awards, a sort of British version of The Oscars. Same as the Oscars, they are the most important awards in the British entertainment industry. They make headlines all over the world. It is the only event that brings British royalty as well since the Duke of Cambridge is the President of the organisation.
BAFTA nominees
This year nominations included outstanding performances from 1917, The Irishman, Joker, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Rocketman, Marriage Story and more, with 1917 being the big winner of the night bringing home seven prizes.
Red carpet experience
Ahead of the Sunday ceremony, the Red Carpet kicked off at 5 pm and I had the opportunity to stand there and assist to the glamorous procession of stars and the encounters I made are priceless! It was an incredible and unforgettable day for me. I’m still all over the place as I can’t believe what happened and the emotional experience was overwhelming.
Prior to the start of the red carpet, the media coverage was impressive with reporters from all sorts of TV and online channels positioning on the red carpet and questioning the public. Around 5 pm all started and here is what happened or better WHO happened.
Celebrity encounters
You have all probably watched Game of Thrones or at least are aware of the series, and the GOT star Emilia Clarke was among the first arrivals to the red carpet.
Netflix stars dominated the red carpet.
If you are a royal watcher like me, you are probably already over The Crown seasons. We know that there is only one true Queen, and I am not talking about Queen Elizabeth II or Claire Foy – but the one and only Olivia Colman, who was on the red carpet with her ‘sister’ from seasons 1 and 2, Vanessa Kirby.
If you are a fan of Sex Education, as many of you are I am sure, you would be delighted to know that making the red carpet at BAFTAs there were also Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield or as we better know them Otis and his mother Dr Jean F. Milburn.
The best encounter, however, was with the myth and legend Al Pacino – one of the greatest actors of all time that Hollywood has ever had and whose performance in The Godfather impressed us all and made us kneel to him. I can’t explain the happiness of that moment. I was all over the moon when I got so close to him and he signed me an autograph – that was a historical moment and an unforgettable one.
The icing on the cake was Margot Robbie. In-person, she is even more stunning and beautiful than on screen, and she is very kind and funny. She is a very talented actress and I must admit I also had a crush on her for some time. When I asked her ‘Can you marry me?’, she went with ‘Sorry, I am already taken’ with a smile; ‘I’m not jealous’ I said and we shared a laugh together. She is a very genuine person other than beautiful.
Unforgettable experience
She was the last celebrity I was able to snap a photo with. Many more were there, but unfortunately, I was not able to take a picture with them or get their autograph. They were quickly escorted inside the Royal Albert Hall, but seeing them was enough – I am referring to Quentin Tarantino, Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron and many more.
The only thing I regret? Leonardo DiCaprio’s nonattendance and Brad Pitt’s – but his acceptance speech delivered by Margot Robbie was hilarious – more of a royal smack!
That was absolutely the best day of my life and I could not be happier!
