On Wednesday 22nd November, the Westminster Alumni event series #WhatItTakes is back with What It Takes To Be A YouTuber. We will be joined by alumna and successful content creator, Lucy Earl A.K.A English With Lucy. To give you a taste of what to expect that evening, we interviewed Lucy to find out more about her YouTube success!
Introduce yourself…
Hi! I’m Lucy, and I run the YouTube channel called English With Lucy which has over half a million subscribers. I’m also a member of the Westminster Business School Alumni as I studied Marketing Communications at an Undergraduate level, in which I received a first. During my time at Westminster I also took part in Polylang where I studied Italian.
How has your Marketing degree helped you get where you are today?
Well it helped me academically but it also gave me so much more than that. Westminster Business School offers so many opportunities including learning another language, work placements and studying abroad. I left university not only with a degree in Marketing Communications, but I was also able to speak Italian and I had relevant work experience to bring with me into my career.
Is your YouTube channel now your main job?
Yes it is! I guess you could call me a full time YouTuber. However, it takes a lot more than just sitting in your bedroom making videos. Making videos actually makes up 15% of what I do.
What advice would you give to any aspiring YouTubers?
My advice would be to start it as a hobby, don’t expect to make any money from it. I have seen it happen before where people start a channel just to make money, and it usually never works out. It’s important to stay passionate about the content your making, and if it turns out to be profitable then that’s awesome!
What is your favourite word?
SQUEEGEE!
Thank you to Lucy for taking the time out to answer our questions, we can’t wait for your talk on Wednesday 22nd November! Make sure to check out Lucy’s channel, English With Lucy if you haven’t already.
