At Westminster Business School, the option to study abroad at a range of Summer Schools across the globe is embedded into all courses. This gives students the unique opportunity to experience other cultures from across the globe first-hand and provides a change of scenery from our London campus.
One student who embarked on a Summer School experience is Layan Shakhshir, a third-year International Business BA student. Over the summer of 2023, Layan decided to study in Rome, at the American University of Rome. Since returning, Layan has written an inspiring blog about her experiences in Rome.
Studying abroad has always been a thrilling concept for me, and when the opportunity arose to spend a month at the American University of Rome, I seized it with both hands. Already living away from my home in Palestine to study at the University of Westminster in London, I was no stranger to the enriching chaos of new cultures. However, my summer in Rome introduced me to a whole new world of academic and personal growth.
Living in the heart of Rome was like stepping into a living museum. Each morning, I woke up to the gentle buzz of the city, with its ancient streets echoing the footsteps of history. The historic architecture, the aroma of fresh Italian coffee, and the vibrant energy of the Roman streets were my daily companions. My accommodation was in a charming neighbourhood that blended the ancient with the modern, giving me a taste of authentic Roman life.
At the American University of Rome, I encountered a unique approach to education that complemented my experiences in London. The smaller class sizes fostered a more intimate learning environment, allowing for meaningful interactions with professors and peers. The teaching style prioritised dynamic discussions and practical applications, which challenged me to think critically and creatively.
One of the most enriching aspects of my Roman stay was the opportunity to meet students from diverse backgrounds. My classmates hailed from all corners of the globe, each bringing their unique perspectives and experiences. This diverse mix of cultures was a productive ground for forming deep and lasting friendships. We bonded over our shared experiences of navigating a new city, exploring historical sites, and, of course, enjoying in the local cuisine.
Exploring Rome with my newfound friends was an adventure in itself. We roamed through the ancient ruins of the Colosseum, marvelled at the detailed art of the Vatican Museums, and tossed coins into the Trevi Fountain, each wish a testament to our shared dreams. Evenings were spent at local trattorias, where we savoured traditional Italian dishes and engaged in lively conversations that often extended late into the night.
Beyond the academic and social experiences, my time in Rome profoundly impacted my personal growth. Living in a city so steeped in history and culture broadened my worldview and deepened my appreciation for global diversity. The blend of rigorous academics and rich cultural immersion pushed me out of my comfort zone, fostering resilience and adaptability.
Reflecting on my month in Rome, I am filled with gratitude. The experience not only enriched my academic journey but also helped me establish connections that will last a lifetime. The American University of Rome became a temporary home where I learned as much from my surroundings and peers as I did from my coursework.
As I returned to the University of Westminster to complete my final year, I carried with me the lessons and memories from my time in Rome. This global experience has been a cornerstone of my education, shaping me into a more confident, culturally aware, and open-minded individual. I am immensely thankful to the University of Westminster for facilitating this incredible opportunity. My summer in Rome was more than just an academic endeavour; it was a transformative chapter in my life that I will cherish forever.
