Organizations today face unprecedented challenges. Some of these challenges include: accelerating pace of change, accelerating executive turnover, declining life expectancy of companies (e.g. life expectancy of Fortune 500 companies has declined from 75 to 15 years in the last half of a century), declining rate of return on assets by 75% in the last 50 years, and declining passion for work and engagement – global figures for engagement show that 80% of employees are less than fully engaged at work and only 25% of employees are passionate about their work.
The key cause of this problem are outdated Management 1.0 practices based on mechanistic paradigm, bureaucratic organization, hierarchical command and control mind set, standardization and specialization. This approach worked well for driving productivity and efficiency in production economy but is detrimental for innovation, engagement and resilience which are crucial for survival of knowledge based organizations. Management 2.0 Hackathon was a collaborative, global effort made by the Management Innovation Exchange (MIX) members focused on generating bold new ideas to create organizations that are fit for the 21st century. The Hackathon started with almost 900 participants around the world, resulting in development of more than 60 “mini-hacks” and 21 full hacks.
Professor Vlatka Hlupic had one of the leading roles in this Hackathon by leading four teams that have developed four full hacks: Why points trump the hierarchy to reward contribution in knowledge organizations, Systemic/Holistic Management: Connecting the Dots with Project Monitoring 2.0, Leading by letting go, and Using “Traditionally Virtual” organizational structure. Because of this role, Vlatka was invited to give a TEDx talk in Oslo on 24 October 2012. This TEDx event was entitled “Corporate Rebels” and it has featured talks by various inspirational speakers from the UK, USA and Norway. In her talk, Vlatka addressed the need for reinventing management, discussed her experience from the Management 2.0 Hackathon, and presented some of the key ideas from the three hacks she led.
