I would like to add my tips.
Think about what makes you different from the others. It may be your previous achievements, it may be family life, it might even be your your social life but being different means that you stand out from the crowd.
Become an expert in social media and understand the pros and cons of using it. Every organisation will have to embrace social media and if you can display a depth of knowledge then you’re ahead of the game. To this end, start following the top social media experts on Twitter to see how they use it and definitely go to networking events especially Twitter ones. Networking is key!
Be an innovator a critical thinker and always be on the look out for opportunities. Businesses need innovators as well as people who understand how to embrace change and know how to implement change within their organisation. If you can provide examples of how you suggested a change which had a positive impact in the company/organisation then you’ll stand out from the crowd.
