Gaining a place on the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) Study India Programme which is open to all UK undergraduate students has been the most exciting thing this summer. My interest in India was sparked by its increasing influence on the global economy as the major multi-national corporations are rapidly expanding their presence and operation in India. As for me being a law student and looking to specialise in International and Commercial Law this three weeks Programme of cultural awareness events in Delhi and Mumbai combined with the internship relevant to my undergraduate degree studies will undoubtedly give me a valuable insight into the culture, education and professional ethics of India.
The Programme’s participants will have the opportunity to experience the best of Delhi and Mumbai through organised visits to the places of cultural, historical and commercial significance. Also the participants will meet their Indian fellow students and the prominent professionals, business people, entrepreneurs from India and those from Britain and other countries who have settled in India.
The Programme is sponsored by the British Council who cover the cost of accommodation, food and activities in India but the participants are responsible for the cost of flights and visa. Many UK universities provide funding for students to meet these extra costs in appreciation of their students’ achievement of gaining a place on this highly competitive Programme and seeing the value their students add to promoting their university in India. However, Westminster University perhaps does not see it this way as no funding was available for me. So if you decide to apply make sure you have at least £600 to pay for your flights and visa.
The UKIERI Study India Programme’s dedicated website http://studyindia.co.uk/ contains detailed information about this unique Programme including the application process.
