MSc Marketing Management students on the Managing the Digital Enterprise module attended the Digital Marketing Show 2013 event taking place in Excel Exhibition Centre, London. The visit was organised by the module leader, Senior Lecturer Panos Hahamis and the students were accompanied by Senior Lecturer Francis Mulleady. The Show visit was organised in order to provide the students with an understanding on how “going digital” can help a business survive and achieve a sustainable competitive advantage.
Alena Tikhova, an MSc Marketing Management student commented on her visit experience to the Show as follows:
“Undoubtedly, businesses of all sizes need to be competitive digitally-wise nowadays, but the question is ‘How the digital world can help a company to achieve its marketing objectives?’. The guest speakers from the world’s leading organisations shared their expertise and knowledge with the visitors, turning the Digital Marketing Show 2013 into an invaluable professional experience”.
Another MSc Marketing Management student, Alexandra Yashina was quoted as saying:
“Few weeks ago as part of the Digital Enterprise Management Course at University of Westminster, I was lucky enough to attend Digital Marketing Show 2013 at the Excel Center. And I should admit it was a great experience! The Show had offered great variety of lectures on most current topics in Digital Marketing. For myself I have found ‘BankOfTheFuture’ startup and the notion of crowd funding very interesting. Most importantly, the Digital Marketing Show was a great place for networking and meeting people with the same interests and emerging ideas. Looking forward for the Digital Marketing Show 2014!”
Bauyrzhan Dosmakov, a fellow MSc Marketing Management student added that:
“The Digital marketing that took place on 28 of November was well organised and provided me with some interesting insight on current trends in the digital world. The event was divided into four pavilions, which were hosting events on different aspects of digital marketing. The presentations that were important to me personally, were the one on crowd funding and on mobile marketing. The former presentation was delivered by ‘BankToTheFuture’, which told us about the lengthy and difficult process of finding investors into a new idea. It usually starts with the closest people (family and friends), who are the only ones who believe in your idea and support you. However, the road goes bumpy after that, because after a kick start you need to find and persuade an angel investor, which is probably the hardest part. ‘BankToTheFuture’ states that it can solve this problem through crowd funding. The latter presentation on mobile marketing has shown us that there is a general trend towards mobile internet. The number of purchases made through a smartphone in the last two years has risen dramatically. The amount of advertising through free mobile applications has also sky rocketed. The presenter was keen on persuading the audience that the future of marketing is about smartphones. To summarise, the Digital Marketing Show had a real buzz, and in my opinion the University of Westminster, and in particular the Westminster Business School should arrange more events like this.”
Finally, Alena Tikhova, an MSc Marketing Management student who also attended, rounded up her experience as follows:
“At the beginning I did not think that the Digital Marketing Show 2013 would have such a great impact on me! The thing that I liked the most of all, was the variety of the presentations starting every 15 minutes, so that the visitors always had something interesting to attend. Sometimes I even felt like I wanted to be present at several events taking place simultaneously! While visiting the show, I was mainly focusing on the presentations demonstrating how small-sized companies with relatively low marketing budgets might benefit from digital marketing nowadays. I especially liked the presentation of the guest speaker from ‘YoSushi’ sharing with us the guidelines that the company followed in order to become popular online and increase sales, eventually. Overall, the event was very well-organized and professionally managed. Despite the fact that there were a lot of people with different backgrounds there, everybody was able to find anything particularly useful. I strongly believe that the students of Westminster Business School should attend the events of that kind more often, in order to make a good contribution to their future career, to broaden their skills and establish some professional connections.”
