Students from the MSc Purchasing and Supply Chain last week visited World Duty Free at their Central Distribution Centre in Runnymede.
World Duty Free should be well known to anyone who has used a UK airport and is a growing International company. Students were given a tour of the bonded warehouse, first going through Airport Security Checks and were also treated to presentations from the company on background, Business Resilience and Systems. Voice picking is used by the company and they are also one of the first in the UK to be piloting Voice putting away. The company is due to implement SAP to help standardise company operations globally – a real life example of what students are studying on the course module on business integration and SAP.
Students learned much from the trip as did the staff who accompanied them, Rachel Lander and Caroline Ennis from BIMO. Staff were particularly impressed with how the company has combined new processes with the best aspects of their older processes and the key emphasis on staff personal development and team work. We were all impressed with how the warehouse kept 24/7 operation through January and February despite the Thames flooding!
Many thanks to our part time students from World Duty Free, Wesley Beresford (Supply Chain Assistant) and Hiren Chotai (Category Planner, Luxury) and to Paul Ohren, Operations Manager at World Duty Free.
Staff with long memories may recognise Hiren – he’s a graduate from 2005 Westminster Business School in Managing Business Information – Financial Services!
