On February 6th, 2013, The Accounting & Management Society had the pleasure of inviting accomplished recruitment consultant Aimee Bateman from CareerCake.com. The event was a master class on job-hunting with social media, tailoring one’s own personal brand and online footprint. Right from the word go Aimee’s infectious personality and insight shone through, capturing the audience’s attention.
The session allowed students to get to grips with the various social media platforms that can be utilised to promote one’s own personal brand to potential employers. LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube are just a few of the social media platforms that Aimee explained can be used to connect and communicate with employers. It’s about identifying who you want your audience to be, then understanding your audience and what you want to communicate. Taking ownership of your online footprint to hone what you want to communicate about yourself, values and skills. Students also had the opportunity to ask those tricky questions relating to the pitfalls of social media including what to put online and what to make sure to keep private. Aimee provided experienced advice with her own view on social medias pro’s and con’s.
Lasting just under two hours although it didn’t feel like it! The room was filled with passionate students wanting to better their prospects in the current job market. Attendees also learnt the importance of visual representation via accurate photos online, how to do a virtual CV outlining the do’s and don’ts as well as how to effectively connect with others to build a professional relationship.
After the session formally closed the floor opened for more questions. Aimee was happy to provide one-on-one advice taking a keen interest in all who had more questions. This shows her dedication and passion for what she does, which is the very reason why the A&M Society invited her.
Smoke TV covered of the event interviewing the societies President Evelyn and Vice President Na’Omi followed by a closing word from Aimee herself. The event was a huge success and wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Nasrawt Said from Student Union, the fantastic efforts of the Accounting & Management Society team and support of it sister societies (Investment & Trading Society, Finance Society and Economics Society).
And last but not least 20-30 lucky guests in the audience were raffle winners to a complimentary dinner joining the Accounting & Management Team at Chipotle Mexican restaurant on February 13th, 2013.
