What is Mentoring?
Mentoring provides an opportunity to share your expertise and volunteer your time with an enthusiastic student. You can support, encourage and guide one of our postgraduate students in managing their career aspirations. A mentor builds a one-to-one relationship with their mentee in order to maximise their chances of fulfilling their potential.
Aims of the Scheme
- To give international postgraduate students an insight into British working practices and policies.
- To provide an opportunity for experienced professionals to share their career experiences and knowledge with students who may wish to venture down a similar path in the near future.
- To allow mentors to share tips on how to step onto and move up a corporate ladder.
- To give mentees the opportunity to test out ideas and therefore increase their productivity through active learning.
The Process
Our mentors typically offer 3 hours of their time over a 3 month period to one of our postgraduate students. In addition to one-to-one meetings you are encouraged to keep in touch over email and telephone. You can also use SKYPE for communication if you and your mentee have computer facilities with web camera and microphone.
Benefits of Mentoring
Being a mentor is seen as a useful addition to a CV, as it provides evidence of listening, coaching, and advising skills.
Direct contact with a bright individual from a different culture provides an alternative perspective and a potentially useful contact. This is particularly useful to companies who increasingly need to compete in international markets.
By taking part you are helping to create a culture of collaborative learning in London. The scheme encourages employees to foster stronger links with the academic community and allows companies to raise their profile on campus.
