If you apply to Westminster Business School, one of the things that you will discover is that #LondonIsOurCampus. Only last week the Marketing Management MA/MSc students had their classes at none other than the Tower of London – one of the pinnacles of the London experience and something which I would recommend to all who visit the capital.
As with all of our courses here at Westminster Business School, we aim to integrate theory and practice. Why learn about brand analysis, or about Porter’s 5 Forces if you are not then able to apply that theory to the real world of marketing and business? Last week our Marketing Management MA/MSc students did just that – their mission, to create a marketing plan that would increase the Tower of London’s revenue.
The day started at a bright and early 8.45am, when the students met at the Middle Drawbridge. The Tower of London had kindly provided the class with a conference room in the New Armouries Building, a great space for team work and presentations, not to mention for eating delicious breakfast pastries 😉 (Thank you Tower of London!). Dr Donna Mai (Course Leader) then briefed the class and split the students into smaller teams who then set off for a couple of hours of research.
For those students who hadn’t visited the Tower of London before, this was also an amazing opportunity for them to see such a top London attraction along with the Crown Jewels, for free. As the official photographer for the day, I joined our students on their tour and really enjoyed spending time with them, finding out more about their experiences here at Westminster. One of the things that really struck me, was just how friendly & international the cohort was. With students from the USA, Italy, Thailand, Norway, India, Switzerland, Italy, the UK (and beyond), and plenty of laughter & welcoming faces, it was an amazing experience just getting to know them a bit better.
Moving on from the tour, the students went back to the conference room and began working on putting their plans together. With creative ideas flowing, the teams worked to use the models that they had been learning about in class to help frame their marketing plans. The groups didn’t have long however and with only a couple of hours to go before presentation time, the pressure was on.
With 6 teams in total, each group presented for approximately 10 minutes, taking the audience through the analysis and steps they would take to increase the Tower of London’s revenue.
The winning team was decided by Course Leader, Dr Donna Mai, Head of Department, Dr Jaafar El-Murad, Senior Lecturers, Clive Helm and Dr Frances Ekwulugo, and two of our students. Many congratulations to them!
All in all, it was an extremely successful day. Thank you to the Tower of London and to the Marketing and Business Strategy department for hosting such a wonderful experience – our students had a great day out and learnt invaluable lessons about the application of marketing theory. If you’d like to see more, why not take a look at this Facebook album, or watch this video of the day!
