Open Day is a great opportunity to find out more about Westminster Business School, but if you’ve not been to London before and you’ve got the time, why not use the opportunity to get to know our fabulous city too? Whether you’re planning on visiting with family or friends or making a solo trip, we’ve thought of a few tips that should help you to navigate your way around. Keep reading and you’ll find practical pointers about travelling across the city; areas close to campus where you can find food and things to do; and tourist savers that you might want to consider if you’re planning a slightly longer stay.*
Practical tips for traveling in London
Okay so the first thing that you need to figure out in a new city is how to get from a-z. Thanks to London’s great transport system, social media updates and friendly Transport For London (TFL) staff, travelling in London is pretty straightforward. To help you figure everything out, here are a few tips for you:
- Download the right maps & apps! TFL provides a number of maps to help people move across London. You can find these here, download a tube map app to your smart phone, or pick one up from the station itself. Sometimes it’s actually easier to walk between stations, and to assist with this, TFL have produced two new maps: one which tells you approximately how many steps there are between tube stations; and one which shows the time it would take to walk the distance. Another helpful transport tool is CityMapper. Useful in any city, just put your journey into this app and you’ll find your way there in no time.
- Do you tweet? If you’re a twitter user check out TFL’s travel alerts twitter account – they tweet regularly about the service and about any problems on the lines.
- Find out which ticket you need before you arrive: there are three main ways in which you can pay on London transport: travel card, Oyster card, and contactless. To find out which would suit you visit this Visitor Tickets page.
- Understanding the system: There are a number of things that will help you to have a safer and more pleasant journey across London, from standing on the right hand side of the escalator, to having your ticket/Oyster/payment card ready. Watch these Transport For London videos to find out more.
Finding food near Marylebone campus
As the upcoming Undergraduate Open Day is 11am-3pm, you might not want to travel too far to find a spot of lunch. To help you maximise your time, here are some ideas for you:
- Marylebone High Street: Only a stone’s throw from the campus, Marylebone High Street has a fantastic array of cafés, restaurants, boutiques, delicatessens, patisseries and boulangeries. Make sure to explore the side streets as well as the high street for tasty treats! Our top tip: if the weather is nice, why not enjoy your food in Paddington Street Gardens or Regent’s Park? To find out more about Marylebone Village including a list of food stops, visit their website.
- Baker Street: Whilst Baker Street counts in some parts as Marylebone village, it’s worth mentioning separately as it’s very different in feel and in terms of what’s on offer. Here you’ll find more chain restaurants, coffee shops and fast food take outs from Pret, to Costa, to Nandos, Chipotle, Bill’s & more.
- St Cristopher’s Place: St Cristopher’s Place is located at the end of Marylebone High Street (approx 20-25 min walk from campus) and near Bond Street station, Oxford Street. It has a delicious selection of cafés and restaurants including a creperie for anyone with a sweet tooth! It’s surrounding side streets also house various Turkish and Greek restaurants as well as some chain restaurants such as Café Rouge.
Things to do locally
There are a number of ways that you can spend your time within the Marylebone area, here are a few of our suggestions:
- Take a walk in Regent’s Park or visit ZSL London Zoo;
- Catch a lunchtime concert at the Wigmore Hall or just down the road at the Royal Academy of Music;
- Enjoy art? Visit the Wallace Collection! It’s free and there’s a lovely garden restaurant available for breakfast, lunch and dinner too (please note that it can get very busy so best to book)!
- Madame Tussauds is situated just opposite Marylebone campus;
- Raining, pouring? Watch a film at the Everyman cinema;
- Whisky connoisseur? Visit Cadenhead’s Whisky Shop and Tasting Room;
- Or perhaps you prefer cheese? Try La Fromagerie;
- Treat yourself at the famous Marylebone bookshop: Daunt Books;
- Shop and browse the boutiques of Marylebone High Street;
- Or, if you prefer the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street, Oxford Circus is literally a 4 minute tube journey from campus! (Allow approx. 15 minutes in total for this journey).
