‘Unpacking the curriculum’ survey
Unpacking the curriculum at Westminster: A decolonial enquiry
The Pedagogies for Social Justice project wanted to better understand how students and staff experience social justice work at our university, especially when it comes to decolonising the curriculum. To do this, a small research team of project members conducted a university-wide survey, gathering perspectives from across departments on current efforts, challenges, and aspirations for decolonial initiatives. By listening to both students and staff, we sought to build a clearer picture of how social justice is understood and practiced within the university. This research is part of our ongoing commitment to critical reflection and action, and we hope these insights will inform future initiatives at Westminster while strengthening conversations about meaningful engagement with decolonial approaches.
The three aims of this study were:
- To gain insight into the perceptions of both students and staff regarding the process of decolonising the curriculum.
- To identify individuals or groups perceived as key agents for driving change within the university, as well as to pinpoint areas where opportunities for change may be present.
- To explore students’ and staff dreams and aspirations for decolonial initiatives within the university community.
We have published the survey questions so that others can use them. To view them, click here.
We have published a report based on this research which explores the key findings, identifies challenges, and provides recommendations. To view the report, click here.
We are holding a launch event for the report on Tuesday 8th April 2025 at the University of Westminster (Regent’s Street Campus), details can be found here.
