Victory over Japan Day

Victory over Japan, also known as V-J Day, marked the end of World War II when Japan surrendered to the Allied forces. This historic moment, officially announced on August 15, 1945, was celebrated worldwide as a triumph of peace. The surrender ended years of conflict, reshaping global relations and paving the way for post-war recovery and rebuilding.

The University of Westminster will host a symposium on Tuesday, 6 May 2025, titled “Reflecting on VJ Day: UK–Japan Pathways to Peace”, to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. The event will explore the enduring impact of VJ Day on peacebuilding and development between the UK and Japan.

Held at Portland Hall, the symposium will feature a rich programme of academic panels, public dialogues, a musical performance, and a traditional tea ceremony — all designed to foster intercultural understanding and promote sustainable peace. 

The event will also highlight the contributions of students actively preparing for the symposium through the DEN network, including writing and reviewing blogs in collaboration with academics over several weeks. Speakers will include prominent academics, journalists, activists, and third-generation hibakusha, offering diverse and thought-provoking perspectives on memory, reconciliation, and peace.
