Our history
DEN has gradually evolved, with a growing impact, into the community that we are today. The initial project was an initiative by Dr Farhang Morady to build a link between the University, local communities and international partners in 2012. The International Community Project (ICP), with very limited funding, engaged students in Politics and International Relations. ICP developed the foundation for Democratic Education Network.
In 2016, the Quintin Hogg Trust (QHT) provided substantial funds for DEN to manage a growing number of projects. In 2019 DEN was a runner-up for the Students’ Experience Award at the prestigious Guardian University Awards.
In 2022 Advance HE made Dr Farhang Morady a National Teaching Fellow in recognition of his outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession in Higher Education.
The success of DEN led to the development
of a new module with credits, ‘Democratic
Engagement in an International Context‘.
This multidisciplinary elective module is
offered by the University to year two
students. The module will take DEN’s
approach, engaging students from the
University of Westminster and global
partner universities worldwide, especially
Vietnam, Turkey and Peru.
Today, students from across all the University of Westminster, bridging together different schools, departments and disciplines into one community: DEN!
