Every year, we edit and publish a book that gathers all the papers presented at the student conference. We, students, meet to peer-review the papers, edit and are in contact with the authors to adapt them for the edited volume. Moreover, we organise the papers thematically, and they design the cover and the different sections in which the book will be divided.
Since 2016, one of the most successful projects involving academics and students has been the publication of DEN’s online magazine, hard copy magazine, and annual book. The magazine features short articles, while the books cover longer and more academic topics, including local, global, social, political, and economic issues.
However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, on-site activities at the University became impossible, presenting a new challenge. To address this, a new strategy was developed to engage students remotely. This involved inspiring and encouraging students to sustain online activities through creative and imaginative approaches.
Using new technology to our advantage, we turned COVID-19 into an opportunity for our students. Undergraduate and postgraduate students and alumni collaborated globally, resulting in over 30 articles expressing their experiences of COVID-19 from around the world, some of which were real stories of local conditions. These publications represent the voices of our students affected by the worldwide pandemic.
The magazine and book projects have become a cornerstone for developing a mentoring strategy to engage and support students at different levels. Academics have used the magazine and the book to mentor, train, and encourage master’s students and alumni to support undergraduate students. Managing projects and delivering them online has been remarkably successful.
Additionally, staff and students have innovated successful approaches and strategies that have made the pandemic successful. The success of the approach has been remarkable, as student testimonials demonstrate.
