The Active Travel Academy is pleased to announce the second run of this module, beginning in the New Year. Modifying transport behaviour – theory, practice and politics is a timely contribution to our understanding of an essential transport subject.
We know that our current travel habits have very significant downsides in terms of road safety, greenhouse gas emissions, air quality etc. We also know that these habits have on the whole proved very difficult to change. But the pandemic has shown how adaptable people actually are. Meanwhile, practice is continuing to evolve: we are getting better at working out what does or does not have a positive impact, and why.
This timely course will provide a thorough insight into the state of the art of modifying behaviour in transport, from well-established interventions (such as speed limits) to relatively new ones (such as subsidy of active travel). It will take participants through the theory and evidence supporting the use of behaviour-change interventions and equip them with the skills to assess interventions critically and to develop them methodically.
“It was brilliant and the way it was delivered for me (online) enabled me to fit it around my other commitments (professional and familial)” (course participant, 2021).
“Had some great guest speakers in talking about projects they had worked on and how well they worked or didn’t” (course participant, 2021).
Four of those who took the course in Spring 2021 have since taken up transport posts with an emphasis on behaviour change.
Details:
Modifying transport behaviour will run on-line on Wednesday evenings from 17:30 to 20:30 (UK time) for 12 sessions beginning 26th January 2022. The course will be led by Dr Tom Cohen with contributions from a wide range of expert guest speakers. The course includes two pieces of assessed coursework: a critical evaluation of a transport behaviour-change intervention; and the development of a new behaviour-change intervention from first principles, in response to a defined transport problem or opportunity.
The course will be available to those interested in the topic as a stand-alone module, subject to satisfying basic entry requirements and availability. It is also part of the MSc in Transport Planning and Management offered at the University of Westminster and students completing it successfully may use the credits towards a Postgraduate Certificate, a Postgraduate Diploma or a full MSc. The price is £850 (with alumni of the university enjoying a 15 per cent discount).
Please register your interest in the course by writing to Tom Cohen so that we can contact you when it becomes possible to apply.
